Happy Sunday!

I am not sure how many of you can relate to this but watching our parents age is a difficult growth experience.

Last Saturday, my mom fell. She was taken to the emergency room. Later, she was admitted into the hospital. On Monday, it was confirmed that she had a fracture in her lumbar spine (L3). Our oldest sister made the decision, on her own, that our mother would have a Kyphoplasty procedure. That procedure made our mom’s fragile demented condition even worse.

The procedure was on Tuesday morning and I was by my mom’s side. Seeing her in so much pain after the procedure made me take note at how unnecessary these “procedures” really are. A brace and physical therapy would have been enough. But the decision maker believed everything the doctor, who profits from performing the procedure, had to say.

Regardless, seeing how fragile life can be, I began to ponder… My parents, like many, planned for their retirement but they never planned for how healthy they wanted to be as they aged.

My parents are older now and I know I cannot change them. But I can certainly learn from watching their experiences. I want to grow old gracefully and learn the latest technology. I want to be part of my children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren’s lives and dance at their weddings. I want to love, laugh, forgive, and feel every emotion so I can release it before it becomes disease in my body.

Yes, I can get hit by a car or something random can happen to end my life prematurely. But know, I am planning not just financially but physically and emotionally today so that 20 to 50 years down the road my children will know that I did everything I could so they would not have to see me suffer with unnecessary diseases. I do hope my children appreciate my vision.

I know we cannot predict our future. If we take care of ourselves today by…

  • Eating well
  • Restorative sleep, at least 7 hours/day
  • Being grateful and thinking positively
  • Staying hydrated
  • Volunteering and feeling a part of society
  • Exercising at least 4 hours/week
  • Managing stress
  • Being outdoors and enjoying nature
  • Forgiving self and others
  • Trusting in God

…the odds will be in our favor that we will achieve the life we want.

What do you want the next 10 to 50 years of your life to look like? Well, start planning today!

I wanted to share the recent class with Joel Fuhrman, MD about the prevention and reversal of cancer.
