Happy Sunday!

When Life Doesn’t Go as Planned, SHIFT!

While Robert and I were on vacation, it rained every day. And when it wasn’t raining, it was cloudy.

One of those nights we planned to go to a Jazz Club with our dear friends, Anne and Andy. We were so looking forward to spending time together, listening to the artist perform, and enjoying the amazing food at the restaurant. But when we arrived, we learned that the power was out in the entire downtown area of Cocoa Beach. The performance and dinner had to be cancelled.

So, we quickly made a change and chose a different restaurant… but there was no live entertainment. What was supposed to be a three-hour experience turned into a quick meal with friends before the torrential rains came down.

As I look back at our vacation, we could have been upset and complained about the weather, the lack of electricity at the jazz club, or the limitations on outdoor activities. Instead, we simply shifted to a different option.

Robert and I played lots of games, danced in our living room, talked and reminisced, watched movies, and truly enjoyed every moment we had together.

The day before our vacation was over, the weather seemed good enough to sit at the beach. But within a short period of time, as Floridians, we knew the rain was coming. Perhaps we were at the beach for 30 minutes before the clouds started marching in. As we got up to our room, we heard thunder.

This was our nicest beach day so far! If you look beyond the dark clouds, you can see that the sky was just a little hazy when we arrived. Those dark gray clouds were nowhere in sight! Within a short time, they suddenly appeared and changed everything! 😱

Look at that rain coming down over the ocean! We had already packed up and were on our way back to our room. The tourists, however, clearly weren’t getting the subtle signs from Mother Nature! 😂⛈️

So, what happened the moment our vacation ended on Saturday, the day we left? Not a drop of rain! We had the most perfect week of weather.

With five days in a row of beautiful weather following our vacation, I said to Robert, “Let’s go back to the resort for the day and take advantage of the sunny beach day we weren’t able to have.”

And that’s exactly what we did. We spent more than three hours at the beach and even went into the amazing, cooling waters of the ocean. It was spectacular and worth the wait!

Look at that sun light. I can still feel the excitement of being at the beach… My Happy Place!

As I look back, I am so grateful that we simply went with the flow. At no time did either of us complain or show frustration. We could have left our vacation early to be in the comfort of our home. There was an acceptance that permeated our experience. There was no resistance to what was happening. Truly… there were no expectations.

Perhaps some of that came from the fact that we live so close to the beach. But the price of the resort could easily have become our focus and soured our experience. Instead, we chose to enjoy what was right in front of us.

So, I propose this question:

How do you deal with disappointment?

How can you go with the flow? How much energy do you spend thinking about what could have been? What can you do to shift into acceptance of “what is?”

Life is not perfect. I believe we can create our own Eden wherever we go.

I am grateful for the reminder that things could have been worse. That mindset made all the difference.

One of my favorite quotes from Max Planck:

“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”

It is time to look for the beauty when things don’t match our expectations. To simply make a different choice when the path we are on seems to end.

It is time to be grateful. We can choose to SHIFT!

S  —  Stop the negative thoughts
—  Honor what you’re feeling & Hit RESET
I   —   Imagine what could be possible
F  —   Find the good & be grateful
T  —  Trust the process

Because sometimes, the best moments are waiting for us on the other side of disappointment. After breakdown is breakthrough. After sunset, there is sunrise.

“When you change the way you look at things… the things you look at, change”

What can you SHIFT today?

How do you SHIFT?

It is a new week and here is what’s happening on

The Lillian McDermott Radio Show/Classroom!

Monday, 8/24/26 Facebook Throwback Party 8:05 am ~ The last time board certified cardiologist, Thomas Levy, MD, JD, was in the classroom, he shared the benefits of vitamin C. He also blew us away when he started speaking about hydrogen peroxide. Dr. Levy is back. This time he will teach us how many ways hydrogen peroxide can be used to benefit our body. (Aired 6/15/21)

Tuesday, 8/25/26 Facebook Throwback Party 8:05 am ~ Can you imagine being abducted and terrorized as a child, then, by the grace of God, escaping? Later, attacked because of his faith, he was jailed multiple times to keep him from preaching the Gospel of Jesus. This did happen to Founder of Unite 4 Africa, Okongo Samson. If this were you, how quick would you be to forgive your persecutors? Okongo will share his story and the importance of forgiveness. (Aired 6/24/21)

Wednesday, 8/26/26 Facebook Throwback Party 8:05 am ~ I learned about Periodontist Lee Sheldon, DMD, when I started my radio show at WMEL. Each week Dr. Sheldon would empower his listeners and patients to choose wiser options for themselves. Nine years later our paths have crossed again because of his mission to remove fluoride from the water we drink. Having fluoride in our water is not just about our teeth… Once we drink it, what happens to the toxins in our body? Dr. Sheldon will share the side effects of fluoride in our water. (Aired 7/15/21)

Thursday, 8/27/26 Facebook Throwback Party 8:05 am ~ Some of you might think eating organic is expensive. But have you thought about growing your own vegetable garden? My dear friend Judy’s neighbor, Bruce Williams, has been an avid gardener. He has an enviable garden. When Judy brings me Bruce’s bounty, I am in heaven. When I actually saw his garden, it was amazing… What talent! I asked Bruce to share how we too can create and grow our own abundant garden so that we can take control of the nutrients going into our body! (Aired 11/10/21)

Friday, 8/28/26 Facebook Throwback Party 8:05 am ~ I always look forward to the holidays for many reasons…  One of those reasons is spending time with the very busy Kristi Nelson, the executive director of “A Network For Grateful Living.” It has been a while since she has been in The Classroom. Since the world seems so fearful and divided, it is important to focus on things that unite. Kristi and I will discuss the path to radical gratitude! (Aired 12/9/21)

It is a busy week and I hope you will set your reminder to meet me on the air…  Let’s listen, discuss, and all learn together!
