As promised, Anneke shared her favorite homemade recipes with us!  

 

 

 

Do you know what is in your laundry detergent, sunscreen or bug spray?  I don’t!!!  Now we can control what we choose in our home, on our body and in our yard while saving money and the environment!

Laundry Detergent-

 

*Washing soda, borax, and fels naptha can all be found on the detergent aisle in your local grocery store.

 

 

Powder

 

2 cups Fels Naptha soap

1 cup Washing soda

1 Cup Borax

—-> Mix well and store in air tight container. Use 1/2 cup per load

 

 

Liquid

 

2 Gallons Hot water

1 bar soap, grated (Can use ivory, fels naptha, castile)

2 Cups baking soda

—-> Melt grated soap with enough hot water to cover in saucepan over medium low heat.

In large bucket, pour 2 gallons hot water, add melted mixture, then add baking soda. Mix well.

Use 1/2 cup per load, 1 cup for heavily soiled.

 

 

 

Homemade weed killer-

 

1 quart (4 cups) White vinegar

1/4 cup salt

2 teaspoons dawn dish soap

—-> Use when there is no chance of rain for at least 2 hours. Try to use in direct sun.

 

 

 

Homemade face masks-

 

*Oily skin-

1 ripe banana

2 Tbs. honey

2-3 drops lemon/lime juice

—-> Apply to skin, leave on face for 10 minutes, rinse with cool water.

 

 

*Dry Skin-

1/2 ripe avocado

1/4 cup honey

—-> Best when used after a sugar scrub. Apply, leave on 10 minutes, rinse off with cool water.

 

 

 

Brightening (also softens fine lines and the appearance of sun damage)

1/2 cup pumpkin pulp

2 eggs

1 tsp. honey

2 tsp. almond milk

2 tsp. apple cider vinegar

Mix well, apply to face, leave on 15-20 minutes, rinse with warm water.

 

 

 

Sugar scrub for the face

1/2 tsp brown sugar

1 tsp. honey

Mix well, apply to face using circular motions

rinse with warm water

 

 

 

Homemade bug spray

 

2 Tbs. witch hazel or vodka

2 Tbs. neem oil

2 tsp. any of the following or combination of

Lemon eucalyptus, Lavender, Rosemary, Rose geranium.

 

 

 

Homemade Sunscreen

 

1/2 cup sweet almond oil, or olive oil

1/4 cup coconut oil

1/4 cup beeswax

2 TBS. zinc oxide powder

*Optional- can add a couple drops of any essential oil for scent.

—-> Combine all ingredients except for the zinc in a pint sized canning jar (mason jar).

Fill medium sized saucepan with a few inches of water.

Put over medium heat

With lid loosely on jar , place in water.

Heat and stir until mixture is melted

Add zinc powder

Remove from heat, continue mixing until it cools.

 

 

 

Deep conditioning hair treatment

 

1 peeled, mashed avocado

1 cup coconut milk

—-> Mix well, heat slowly over medium well heat.

Test temperature on inside of wrist.

Apply to hair and scalp

Wrap with warm towel or shower cap

Leave on 15-20 minutes

Rinse with warm water

Shampoo as normal

 

 

 

Anti-Fungal foot soak

 

Fill basin with original brown Listerine.

Soak feet 10-15 minutes a day

1-2 times per week

 

 

 

No streak window cleaner

 

1 cup white vinegar

2 Tbs. Rubbing alcohol

 

 

 

Non-toxic all purpose cleaner

 

1/2 cup distilled water

1/2 cup white vinegar

4 Tbs. Lemon juice

10 drops tea tree essential oil

10 drops lavender essential oil

 

 

 

Homemade diaper cream

 

1/2 cup shea butter

1/4 cup coconut oil

1 Tbs. beeswax

2 Tbs. vegetable glycerin

—-> Melt shea, coconut, and beeswax in small saucepan over medium low heat.

Remove from heat, add vegetable glycerin

Beat with an electric mixer until creamy

Pour into glass container, let cool

*The final product will be very thick, only a small amount is needed.

 

 

 

Homemade herbal baby wipes

 

2 cups distilled water

2 tsp. baby shampoo

1/4 cup aloe vera juice

1 Tbs. Coconut oil

3 drops tea tree essential oil

3 drops lavender essential oil

—-> Mix all ingredients well

Cut roll of paper towels in half with bread knife, remove inner tube.

Pour mixture over half of roll in a quart jar,zip lock bag or in a plastic Tupperware

 

 

 

Infused cooking oil

 

*There are a couple different ways to infuse your plain cooking oil.

The easiest way is to add whatever the spice, herb, or aromatic is directly into the oil. Let sit 5-10 days. Use directly on food.

The other way is to heat the oil and the herb, spice, or aromatic over medium low heat for 5 minutes, strain, and refrigerate.

 

 

Some ideas you can try as far as spices go are,

Red pepper flakes

Curry powder

Mustard seeds/powder

Cumin

Dill

Thyme

Oregano

Rainbow peppercorns

 

 

 

Some herbs that make a really nice flavored oil are

Basil

Chives

Mint

Rosemary

Sage

Parsley

Tarragon

 

Anneke’s personal favorite are the aromatics

Ginger

Onion

Scallion

Garlic
